Start with the existing building
A terrace garden needs more than outdoor furniture and plants. Record drains, waterproofing details, parapets, access and existing services. Before adding heavy planters, permanent seating or a pavilion, have the structure assessed. A visual reference cannot tell you what an existing roof can carry.
Plan shade around how you use the terrace
A dining table, evening lounge and small prayer pavilion each have different needs. Observe sun and wind at the times you expect to use the space. The Mediterranean terrace uses a timber pergola, while the darker Japanese-inspired design separates seating from a gravel garden. Borrow the zoning idea and adapt the shading to your own orientation.
Keep maintenance routes open
Plants need watering and occasional replacement; drains and waterproofing need inspection. Do not bury essential access under a permanent deck or fixed planter. Select finishes and cushions intended for outdoor exposure, and confirm how they should be cleaned and stored. A terrace that is easy to maintain is more likely to remain usable.
Treat a facade as part of the architecture
The brick villa, Mediterranean villa and green-screened concrete design have different proportions and openings. Their appearance depends on the structure, roof and orientation. Applying a similar surface to an unrelated building may not achieve the same result. Work with the project architect on window positions, privacy, shade and weather protection before selecting decorative details.
Use references to make better decisions
Bring a site plan, existing photographs and the elements you like to the design discussion. Perhaps it is the brick screen, the terrace seating layout or the sage shutters. Identifying that preference lets the team develop a suitable solution rather than copy a whole building that was designed for a different site.
